About

A lifetime spent playing with crochet hooks, yarn and thread has led me here…among other places.

Lace is not merely a frilly adornment for garments. Nor is it relegated to wedding dresses, doilies, or tablecloths. While it can be all those things–and we should celebrate lace in all its incarnations–we should also break barriers and embrace the inherent art of lace.

My name is Sheryl Means and I love to crochet with thread. It doesn’t matter if I am making art, or trying to follow a pattern for something useful or decorative, I am enamored with the fabric that can be created with simple thread and a hook.

I have a keen interest in the history of modern crochet. How did we get here, where are we going? I have studied, read, crocheted and wondered some more.

Of all the yarn related fiber arts and crafts, crochet is among the youngest and often the most maligned. Its roots in reproducing expensive lace in the 19th century may have something to do with its rather pedestrian reputation. I am thankful to have lived long enough, and at just the right era to see a transformation occurring in the world of crochet as an art form.

My goal, as a lover of crochet, is to dig up and write about the hidden gems of my beloved craft, the people responsible, and where the new generation will guide the future of crochet. I would love to have you follow along. There are fascinating stories to be told.
